Bargarh, Odisha – April 1, 2025: Today marks the 32nd Foundation Day of Bargarh District, a momentous occasion celebrating the district's rich cultural heritage, historical significance, and continuous progress. Formed on April 1, 1993, after being separated from Sambalpur district, Bargarh has since flourished into an important economic and cultural hub of Odisha.
A Legacy of Culture and Development
Bargarh, known as the 'Rice Bowl of Odisha,' is famous for its extensive paddy cultivation, supported by irrigation from the Hirakud Dam. The district is also globally recognized for hosting Dhanu Yatra, the world’s largest open-air theatrical festival, which showcases episodes from Lord Krishna’s life.
Beyond its agricultural and cultural significance, Bargarh has made remarkable progress in industrial development, education, and infrastructure, enhancing the quality of life for its residents. Covering an area of 5,837 square kilometers, the district had a population of 1,481,255 as per the 2011 Census. It shares its boundaries with Chhattisgarh to the north, Sambalpur district to the east, Balangir and Subarnapur districts to the south, and Nuapada district to the west.
