300 beneficiaries to be trained in modern weaving techniques; stipend and subsidised loans to boost self-employment

A 60-day skill development training programme for Scheduled Caste (SC) weavers has been launched in Bargarh district under the Pradhan Mantri Anusuchit Jaati Abhyuday Yojana (PM-AJAY).
The programme is being conducted at handloom centres located in Goth, Chhuriyapali, and Sadhupali under Sohela block, as well as Rangamatia and Bijepur under Bijepur block.
Organised jointly by the Department of ST & SC Development, Minorities & Backward Classes Welfare, along with the Department of Handlooms, Textiles & Handicrafts, the initiative aims to enhance the skills of SC weavers by introducing them to modern weaving techniques while strengthening their traditional expertise.
As part of the training, participants will receive hands-on experience in advanced weaving methods such as Dobby and Jala, along with exposure to contemporary design and production practices. The programme is focused on improving productivity, increasing income levels, and making local handloom products more competitive in the market.
Officials stated that around 300 SC weavers in the district will be trained in three phases over the next six months. During the training period, each participant will receive a daily stipend of ₹200, amounting to ₹6,000 for the entire duration.
Upon successful completion of the programme, beneficiaries will also be eligible for bank loans up to ₹1 lakh with a 50% subsidy, enabling them to pursue self-employment opportunities.
The programme is being conducted under the guidance of Joint Director Devjit Nandi. Among others present on the occasion were OFDC member Rajkumar Mahanand, the District Welfare Officer, District Information & Public Relations Officer, BDO of Sohela, District Labour Officer, and officials from the handloom and handicrafts department.
Officials encouraged the trainees to make the most of this opportunity, stating that the initiative will play a significant role in the socio-economic upliftment of SC weavers in Bargarh while also preserving and promoting the region’s rich handloom heritage.
