Severe Air Pollution in Northern India

Severe Air Pollution in Northern India
New Delhi, November 20, 2024 (Shree Shyam Sandesh News Bureau) – Northern India, particularly New Delhi, is facing a severe air pollution crisis as toxic smog envelops the region. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in several areas has surpassed “severe plus” levels, far exceeding the World Health Organization’s recommended safe limits.
Impact and Emergency Measures

The alarming air quality has triggered the enforcement of strict measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which include:

1. Suspension of In-Person Classes: Schools have shifted to online learning for all students, except for grades 10 and 12, who continue in-person classes under necessary precautions.

2. Construction Ban: All construction activities, including work on roads, flyovers, and public projects, have been temporarily halted.

3. Traffic Restrictions: Entry of trucks carrying non-essential items into Delhi has been banned. Only commercial vehicles running on cleaner fuels are permitted.

4. Work-from-Home Mandate: Employers, both in government and private sectors, have been advised to ensure at least 50% of their workforce works remotely.

Health Concerns

The dense smog is causing severe health problems, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions. Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors, avoid strenuous outdoor activities, and use air purifiers if available.

The Supreme Court has also criticized the Delhi government and neighboring states for their delayed response to the crisis, emphasizing the need for long-term pollution control strategies.

Causes of Pollution

The primary contributors to the air pollution include:

Vehicular Emissions: Exhaust from vehicles remains a major source of particulate matter.

Industrial Activities: Factories and power plants contribute significantly to air pollution.

Crop Residue Burning: Stubble burning in the neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana continues to be a major seasonal factor despite restrictions.

While efforts are underway to address these issues, pollution levels remain critically high, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable solutions and regional cooperation.
